These questions are taken from a Change-Readiness test in Sacred Cows Make the Best Burgers by Robert Kriegel and David Brandt. Adaptability is one of the measures of how well you handle change. The others are resourcefulness, optimism, adventurousness, drive, confidence, and tolerance for ambiguity.

Total your score for the five statements and subtract the total from 35.

*If your score falls between 22-26 you are in the optimal change-ready zone.

*A score below 22 means that you may be trying too hard to resist change and you may be holding on to ‘sacred cows:‘ outmoded beliefs, habits, and behaviors that no longer serve you.

*Scoring above 26 indicates a lack of commitment to things that may be important to you.

It can be a challenge to move into the optimal zone. You may resist change because you don‘t think you‘ll be able handle the new challenge. Thinking of all the challenges you have already mastered may help. You have been learning and adapting all your life.

If you are too adaptable, though, you may feel powerless and need to take stock of those things that you can affect and learn to stand up for yourself.

If you would like to change your score, think of one small thing you can do each day to move in the direction you want to go, and then do it. It can be as simple as tasting a new food, or taking a different route to work, or not answering the telephone when you are busy.

Have fun practicing.
