Who Decides What You Truly Deserve?

If you received a windfall of cash to spend on something that gives you joy, what would you spend it on? New clothes, sports equipment, a special restaurant dinner, computer games, paying off debts, tickets to a play, a concert, or a sporting event, or donating it to a favorite charity are all options. There is obviously no right answer. Your choice depends on your own experience. What feels like abundance to you could mean nothing for someone else.

Now compare your answer to what you choose to spend your discretionary money or time on now. If you are spending it thoughtlessly, doing what you have always done, you may be missing out. If you are letting someone else direct your spending, it may be time to renegotiate.

Long ago, all the discretionary money in our household was going to purchase camera equipment for my new husband. I truly wanted him to be happy but realized that there was no money left for small luxuries I enjoyed. We decided to separate extra money into his and hers accounts. It’s worked for us, and since then I haven’t hesitated to spend money on things I enjoy and he may not. We have enjoyed abundance both separately and together.
