When you say, “I can’t…,” whether to yourself or aloud to someone else, what do you really mean? Sometimes you mean “I don’t want to.” When it’s about understanding your finances, you may mean “I’m scared of what will happen if I do that.”
You can explore this by asking yourself what would actually happen if I did do what I say I can’t do? If you go a little deeper and ask, “and then what would happen?” The answer might surprise you. Often the outcome you’re imagining is a fantasy of “being a bag lady,” whatever that means to you.
If you’re afraid to balance your checkbook, to open your bills, or to calculate how much money you really owe, it’s probably because you’re afraid of what you’ll discover.
Imagining how awful it will be to run out of money before you run out of month takes more energy than figuring out how to cut back a little before the end of the month.
You can gather your energy to solve the problem by retrieving your energy from your worst possible fears. Just start the 3 sentences with “I retrieve my energy bound up in this fantasy of [your version of being a bag lady] and take it to the right place in myself.” Then complete the other sentences to find relief and the energy to get on with managing what is important.
