I stopped buying Gazingus pins in 1990, the year I heard the late Joe Dominguez’s lectures on Your Money or Your Life, 2 years before his famous book was published. I know when I stopped because that’s the last date on my pile of United States Proof Sets that I started collecting in 1979.
I remember Joe’s definition of a Gazingus pin as something you always buy, put in a drawer and forget about. Much of my collection, originally purchased as an investment, is in the drawer. I could sell them for a few dollars more than the $10 per set I paid for them in 1979 which would be like spending $46.22 in 2025 dollars for something worth about $16.
In other words, I automatically spent money on something without thinking about it or understanding much about what I was doing. Your Gazingus pins might be on your charge card statement in forgotten subscriptions you automatically pay for each month, or in a drawer like mine are.
Joe made me stop and think about whether what I was doing with my money was really serving me. The abundance I enjoy now grew out of clarifying how I wanted to use both my money and my time, but it grew out of something small—my Gazingus pins. What is your small step?
