Stop Postponing the Life You Want

“Moderation in all things with occasional ecstatic excess.” I learned that from one of my favorite spiritual teachers, the late Jean Houston. It’s a wonderful theme to live by.

I have no trouble with moderation.  My parents modeled it, so it seems completely normal.  When I was much younger, excess was viewed as things my husband and I do routinely now. Ecstatic excess might have been a week at a resort or a cruise then.

My perspective changed. Now I feel deprived if I don’t get to do those things at least once a year. Now I have more trouble with ecstatic excess. The constraints are less about money; they are about our energy and stamina.

Sometimes it’s about taking a whole day to read a novel instead of keeping up with other chores. I don’t think it reaches the level of ecstatic, but I certainly enjoy it.

What about you? Are you living the way you want to live? Are you doing things on your bucket list? Do you even have a bucket list? I don’t. Is moderation or excess easier for you? What did your family model for you?  How has your experience changed over time?

The Timeline Experiment in Chapter 5 of Embrace Prosperity helps you envision moving from where you are now to experiencing abundance in your own life. The secret sauce is using the 3-sentence process to move past the hard places and clarify what you really want now.
