You’re Not Choosing. You’re Being Controlled.

My granddaughter-in-law cleared up a mystery for me with just a few words: “It’s the dopamine hit, Grandma.”

I have worked with people in recovery from addictions for most of my professional career, but when it came to my own mini addiction, that answer never occurred to me. We get a dopamine hit every time someone likes a social media post. It keeps us coming back for more. That’s one reason why social media is so addictive.

But that isn’t my weakness. Getting bargains is! I spent so much of my life being frugal to enable me to reach a place of financial independence that I came to enjoy the game of getting the most for my money.

So, I still read the grocery ads carefully, click to get my discounts, and drop by the mark-down sections of the supermarket each time I am there. It’s not about the money anymore, it’s about that little squirt of feel-good juice I get each time I snag a bargain.

The mystery is solved. That’s why I keep doing something that is completely unnecessary for my life now. I’ve decided to keep enjoying the game. It’s a harmless use of a little bit of my time.

EMBRACE PROSPERITY helps you understand the mystery of why you do what you do with your financial life—and change it gently if it doesn’t help you meet your goals. Read it now and explore the many ways we offer to encourage you to practice abundance.
