How Much Do You Rely on Hidden Safety Nets?
When I woke up today, I discovered that a part of my prosperity I never think about was missing. My house had no power. I couldn’t tell the time because the clocks I rely on had blank faces. It was chilly, the heat pump wasn’t working, and I wondered how long the electricity had been off. I couldn’t tell because there was no way to know when an electronic clock stopped.
I wasn’t helpless. My solar-battery powered watch was working and so was my cell phone. My next thought was to conserve my battery power. I shut down unnecessary apps. Until that moment I had not realized how much I depend on electricity for so many of the comforts of my life.

With my phone I learned that the nearby YMCA had power and my Silver Sneakers class would proceed as usual. I also learned that the power company had no idea when the problem would be fixed. With a cold breakfast and no hot drink, I headed out, but I needed help to get the garage door open. The opener is electric also.
All is well. The power came on at 1:55 pm. I am grateful for my restored comfort and sense of well-being. And I have a new appreciation that life as I know it is dependent on nearly invisible systems run by dedicated workers who braved the storm to fix the problem.
